Burn Notice burns Annuities

Last Saturday morning I found an interesting new (for me) show on USA Network called “Burn Notice.” The program is about a spy and his hottie ex-girlfriend and beer-drinking buddy who get into all sorts of semi-serious adventures and use cool Hollywood spy tricks to solve the mystery. It’s not nearly as serious (or disturbing) as the CSI line of shows (or its ilk), and so I enjoyed having it on in the background on Saturday morning. But the best part was that the show’s star, Michael Weston (played by Jeffrey Donovan), had to develop a better scam to out-con the con-artist. And what scam did he come up with? Annuities! The con was to get into a senior’s home and get them to liquidate all assets and purchase an annuity contract, and then just walk away with the money! How strange is it that the concept of annuities and their sales to seniors as scams has become almost a colloquialism?!
